So, I gave it a hard thougt once more: In which way am I going to display the Company and Squad affiliation of my Marines. The official heraldry / insignia has changed a few times and lacks in consistency to satisfy me. So first off is a short overview of official heraldry:
I like to use the current colour scheme, so I'm not going back to first edition.
This is the early 3rd edition heraldry of the Salamanders. It looks quite nice, but there is no hint given what's the company marking and how the heraldry varies between the companys. As they are basically a Codex Chapter they should have some kind of colour code that marks their company affiliation (Codex Astartes says coloured shoulder pad rim).
So in order to avoid this problem I tried to design different flames to differ my squads, but unfortunately it didn't add up to a satisfactory result.

The next thing takes a longer way: the 5th, 6th and 7th Company.
The yellow/ white background is part of the company colour, otherwise 4th + 6th and 5th + 7th would have the same company colour. Alright, now each company maintaines their own motor pool of light armour (Rhinos, Bikes etc.). So they are an inherent part of a company and therefore bear the company colour. The Codex Astartes demands a coloured circle with the company number inside, but instead the Sallies use a coloured head. So for the reserve companies this means that the background of each salamander head on their vehicles should be yellow or white. I think this would look really weird and doesn't fit the overall colour scheme. Virtually Mantis Warriors with the yellow^^
That is why I sat down again to think about a nice heraldry scheme once more. I finally decided to use a combination of both schemes with a few personal alterations. I got inspired by the new Forge World colour scheme from Imperial Armour 10 - The Badab War II.
I basically use the Armageddon colour code with a darker green for 4th and no inverted colours for the reserve. Instead I'm going with a sustained black background and a yellow head for the 5th, red for the 6th and grey for the 7th company. They are all colours that fit the Salamanders colour scheme and even are Codex Astartes approved.
For squad markings I'm using the standard Codex Astartes markings in company colours with an aberration for my Veterans. So in battle my Marines don't have to turn around to show their brothers their company affiliation. The second reason for my decision is indicated in the picture below.
I think it would be simply too much fire on a single shoulder pad with the combination of both fire markings. The arrow however is a nice contrast on the shoulder pad. Instead I like to use fire markings only as honour markings as it suits the Promethean Cult.
Only exception to this is the Pyre Guard (aka Honour Guard - the "Veterans of the Veterans"), the Corporal and the Sergeant in each squad. The Corporal is, by the way, the guy who leads the second half of a squad. I think he was called "Squad Leader" in the early days. I like to point him out from the rest when he is leading his combat squad.
According to the Codex a Sergeant has a red helmet and a red skull on a shoulder pad. I don't like the red helmet with the Salamanders green, so instead I'm using a black one. A red skull isn't either an option as the 6th company has already red insignia on their pads. The same is true for white with the 1st and 2nd. Maybe a black skull? Hm doesn't fit with the black background.... So I need another way to mark the Sergeants status on his shoulder pad. I finally decided to go with a small flame in his squad insignia. The Corporal is marked similar to the Sergeant.
The summary of my results are displayed in the following picture (and the Salamanders Chapter Organisation may be usefull as well):

ReplyDeleteI have a question regarding the markings for squad designation in 8th edition. The codex says salamanders don't use squad designations. To which markings does this relate , the ones for squad number, role (battleline, close support, fire support etc.) or both?

ReplyDeleteFrom looking at the old and official heraldry for salamanders, I must say that this version is a blessing, especially when it comes to 5th and 6th, but I really like your take on 7th company as well. The way you changed the right arm marking is also cool and a nice inspiration if you wan to mark a unit; troops, fire support etc.
